KUDOS TO MUCHINGA PROVINCE CHIEFS FOR REJECTING THE CONSTITUTION AMENDMENTS

I wish to commend all the Chiefs in Muchinga Province for their firm and united stance in rejecting the proposed amendments to the Republican Constitution.

In the presence of the Minister of Justice, Hon. Princess Kasune, on Friday, 30th May 2025, during a gathering held in Chinsali, disguised as a stakeholders meeting, our traditional leaders made it abundantly clear that they will not support any changes that undermine the will and voice of the people.

The Chiefs rightly objected to the lack of consultation and highlighted the dangerous implications of the proposed amendment to Article 72. This amendment seeks to empower political parties to handpick Members of Parliament in the event of expulsion, death, or resignation, thereby stripping citizens of their democratic right to elect a representative of their choice.

Your Royal Highnesses, your courage has unmasked a veiled attempt to weaken our democracy. Mwatusebulula insoni! Your patriotism, unity of purpose, and unwavering commitment to the people of Muchinga Province have inspired us all. May this unity and clarity of purpose continue to guide us as we safeguard our collective interests.

What is most troubling is the glaring contradiction: for over four years, the government has failed to hold any meaningful stakeholder engagement to address the chronic underdevelopment of our province. We have seen no tangible capital projects, while our township and feeder roads remain in a state of disrepair. And yet, resources and effort are being directed towards constitutional amendments that offer no value to the daily lives of our people.

We stand firmly with our Chiefs and urge all well-meaning citizens to reject any constitutional amendments that seek to erode democracy and silence the voice of the people.

Hon Francis Robert Kapyanga MP
Mpika Constituency
